You're Not Alone: How to Cope With Depression as a Stay-At-Home Mom

Important and rewarding as it is...Motherhood can also be one of the Most Challenging and Overwhelming Jobs Ever

From the RAFT Counseling Team in Parker, CO

Being a stay-at-home mom is one of the most important and rewarding jobs in the world. But it's also one of the most challenging, and it's not uncommon for moms to feel isolated, overwhelmed, and depressed. If you're feeling down, know that you're not alone—and there are things you can do to start feeling better.

Understand You're Not Alone

First and foremost, understand that you're not alone. Many women feel like you do. It's normal to feel like you can't do it all, and like you're not good enough. Remember that you're doing an amazing job, and that your children are lucky to have you as their mother. Joining a moms group or online community for support and discussion can be a great way to decrease isolation. There are other women out there who understand exactly what you're going through—and they can offer advice, support, and friendship.

Things You Can Do Right Now to Feel Better

Second, get outside and take a walk, even if it's just around the block. The fresh air and exercise will do you good, both physically and mentally.

Third, talk to your partner or a close friend about your feelings and how you're coping (or not coping). It's important to communicate with the people closest to you about what you're going through. They may not be experiencing the same thing, but they can offer love and support. And accept help from family and friends—don't try to do everything on your own! There's no shame in asking for help when you need it; in fact, it's a sign of strength.

And finally, if the depression is severe or lasts for more than a few weeks, seek professional help. Don't hesitate to reach out to a therapist or counselor if you need someone to talk to. They can offer additional support and resources. Remember: there's no shame in seeking help when you need it—in fact, it's a sign of strength!
